Fat Fasting – Did Atkins Have the Right Idea?

Low-carb diets have been around for years. While the Atkins Diet may have popularized a low-carb way of eating, it faced many criticisms. However, with the rise in popularity of fat fasting, it seems that Atkins may have been a healthier way of eating than is given credit.

What is Fat Fasting?

Fat fasting is loosely based on the popular low-carb, high-fat diets and is designed to be performed from 2 to 5 days. During this time, you consume 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day, and 80% to 90% of calories should be from fat. This is not true “fasting,” but a technique used to quickly shed a few pounds, to break a weight loss plateau, or to kick start your body into ketosis, the state where fat is burned for energy instead of carbohydrates.

By totally eliminating carbohydrates, your body begins to burn fat as fuel and the fat your body uses is not just from the food you are consuming. If you can get your body into ketosis, which this “fast” is designed to do, your body burns fat as its source of energy. As we get older, hormonal changes can lead to weight gain, while muscles atrophy and body fat increases. This fat fast can be the hack that gets you out of the aging cycle so you can head into a healthier fitness plan and experience real results.

How to Start Fat Fasting

Plan your meals for 2 to 5 days, depending on how long you will fast. If this is your first time, your goal should be no longer than 3 days.

Your choice of foods should include fatty but healthy foods like avocado, macadamia nuts, full-fat cream and high-fat cheese. Small amounts of protein can include grass-fed beef, bacon, or chicken (dark meat and skin). Add-ons can include mayonnaise, herbs, ghee, lard, bone broth, coconut oil, sour cream, dairy butter, and nut butters.

Find recipes online to cover 3-5 meals a day. Meals and snacks are similar to these:

  • Egg and bacon filled baked avocados
  • 1 ounce of macadamia nuts with cream cheese
  • 1 celery stalk with 2 ounces of cream cheese
  • 3 bacon slices with 2 egg yolks
  • 1 cup bone broth with 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • Classic buffalo wings with sugar-free ranch dressing
  • Egg muffins made with scrambled eggs, chopped bacon, cheese, green onion and red pepper bits baked in muffin tins

The key is to limit protein and cut out carbohydrates, so your body relies only on fat for energy. If you were not in ketosis when you started, it might be an uncomfortable two or three days, but keep in mind it’s what is known as the “keto flu,” and it will pass. Be sure to drink spring or filtered water to help your body remove metabolic waste.

Fat Fasting Isn’t Right For Everyone

It should be noted that this fast may not be for everyone. If you have gallbladder issues, the fat intake can cause issues. For some, this technique may cause fluctuations in blood sugar, heartbeat, and blood pressure. If you take any medications or have any medical conditions, either talk to your doctor first.
