Water Is More Than H₂O: Why I’m Paying Attention to Structured Water

We talk a lot about what we eat, how we move, what supplements we take, and how we sleep. But there’s one thing most of us completely overlook, even those of us deep in the natural health world: the quality of the water we drink. And I don’t just mean filtered versus unfiltered.

I recently had a conversation on the podcast with Patrick Durkin, founder of The Wellness Enterprise and author of Flow: From Pure and Safe Water to Higher States of Consciousness. Patrick has spent over a decade studying water, not just as a chemical compound but as something dynamic that responds to its environment. What he shared challenged some of my assumptions and made me rethink something I thought I already understood.

Water Has Structure

Most of us learned in school that water is simply H₂O. Two hydrogen atoms, one oxygen atom, end of story. But researchers like Dr. Gerald Pollack at the University of Washington have been studying what’s known as the “fourth phase” of water, a structured, gel-like state that behaves differently from regular liquid water. This structured water, sometimes called EZ water (exclusion zone water), exists naturally in flowing rivers, mountain springs, and inside our own cells.

The water inside your body isn’t sloshing around like what comes out of your tap. It’s organized. It lines the surfaces of your cells and plays a role in how your mitochondria produce energy, how nutrients get transported, and how your cells communicate with each other. When that internal water loses its structure, things start to break down at the cellular level, often showing up as fatigue, brain fog, poor recovery, and sluggish detox.

This is where it gets interesting. If the water inside your body has structure and that structure matters for your health, then the logical next question is: does the structure of the water you drink also matter?

What Patrick Durkin Discovered

Patrick came to water from an unexpected direction. He spent 18 years in the stock market before his health collapsed so severely that he called an ambulance on his last day of work because of kidney pain. That experience sent him searching for answers, and water kept showing up as the thread that connected everything.

He started The Wellness Enterprise in 2013 with a mission to help people understand water differently. His perspective is that all water holds some kind of structure, but the real question is what kind of structure it carries. Water that flows through natural systems like springs and rivers picks up a coherent organization from its environment. Water that sits in plastic bottles, runs through miles of pressurized pipes, or gets exposed to chemical treatment has lost much of that natural patterning.

Patrick’s creation, the Aqua Energizer, is a structured water device designed to restore that natural organization. The idea behind it is that by passing water through a specific process that mimics what happens in nature, you can return it to a more coherent state, closer to what your body actually recognizes and can use.

My Experience With It

I’ll be honest with you. I’m someone who stays open to new ideas in this space, especially anything that connects back to the foundations of how the body actually works. When I first heard about structured water devices, I was curious rather than skeptical. I’ve learned over the years that some of the most meaningful discoveries I’ve made came from staying open to things that didn’t fit neatly into what I already believed.

So I tried the Aqua Energizer. And two things happened that I couldn’t dismiss.

First, the water tasted noticeably different. Cleaner, smoother, softer. It was the kind of difference you notice immediately, not something you have to convince yourself of.

Second, and this is the one that really got my attention, my dogs consistently chose the energized water over their regular water bowl. Every single time. Animals don’t have placebo responses. They don’t read labels or get influenced by marketing. They just go to what their body tells them is better.

That doesn’t prove everything, but it made me pay closer attention.

How This Connects to What We Already Know

If you’ve been following my work for a while, you know I’ve been going deeper into quantum biology, light therapy, and how the body operates at the cellular level. One of the things I’ve learned is that light, water, and magnetism are the three foundational forces that drive cellular function. They’re interconnected in ways that most conventional health advice completely misses.

We already know that sunlight changes the structure of water inside the body. We know that structured water plays a role in mitochondrial energy production. We know that when cellular hydration breaks down, the whole system starts struggling. So the idea that the water you put into your body might also carry a certain quality or organization isn’t a leap. It’s actually a logical extension of the same science.

Patrick talks about water as something that responds to its environment, picking up patterns from whatever surrounds it. Whether that’s the mineral content of a mountain spring, the electromagnetic field of the earth, or the chemical residue of municipal treatment, water takes on the character of what it moves through. His device is designed to give water a pattern that resembles what nature would provide.

What I Think About This

I want to be clear about where I stand. Clean water, sunlight, real food, movement, and good sleep are still the foundation of everything I teach. Nothing replaces those. But I’ve learned over the years that there are layers to health that go beyond the basics, and water quality is one of those layers that most people haven’t explored yet.

The Aqua Energizer isn’t a magic fix. It’s a tool. And like any tool, it works best when everything else is already in place. But for those of you who are doing the work, eating well, fasting, getting sunlight, managing stress, and still feeling like something is missing, this might be worth looking into.

I’ve been using it in my own home, and I plan to keep using it. The taste difference alone would keep me coming back, but what interests me more is the bigger picture of how water, light, and energy work together in the body. We’re just beginning to understand these connections, and I think structured water is going to become a much larger part of the conversation in the years ahead.
