In our hyper-connected, notification-saturated world, feeling overwhelmed is the new normal. We scroll, we refresh, and we multitask our way through the day, only to collapse into bed with minds that refuse to switch off. If you feel like your attention span has shrunk to that of a goldfish, you aren’t alone—you’re the target of an economy built on your distraction.
In a recent episode of The Aging Games Podcast, host Lynn Hardy sat down with meditation and breathwork coach Dan Oig to discuss how we can reclaim our nervous systems from the chaos of modern life.
The Silent Signals of a Fried Nervous System
How do you know if your brain has been “hijacked”? Dan Oig suggests looking at two primary indicators: sleep quality and the urge to distract.
If you find yourself lying in bed for an hour with your mind racing, that is a clear sign that your nervous system is stuck in a “high-stress” state, unable to down-regulate into rest and recovery. Furthermore, if you’re a compulsive “phone checker”—reaching for your device dozens of times a day for a quick dopamine hit—you’re essentially looking for a regulator in the wrong place.
The “Monkey Mind” Antidote: Mindfulness and Noting
If you struggle to stay focused on a single task, Oig recommends mindfulness meditation with “noting.” This isn’t just about sitting in silence; it’s about training your focus muscle.
Here’s how it works:
- The Setup: Sit for 10–15 minutes and focus on your breath.
- The Observation: When your mind wanders—and it will—don’t judge yourself. Simply notice that you’ve been distracted.
- The “Note”: Attach a simple, one-word category to the thought, such as “bill,” “logistics,” or “emotion”.
By categorizing these thoughts, you’re not trying to remember them; you’re peeling back the curtain on your own mental loops. Over time, you begin to see patterns in what stresses you out, allowing you to catch yourself before you spiral.
Why Multitasking is a Trap
We love to pride ourselves on being “productive” by doing five things at once, but Oig points out a harsh reality: multitasking is a performance killer. When you focus on one task, you operate at 100% capacity. Split that attention into two, and your effectiveness drops significantly. By the time you’re juggling ten tabs on your computer, you’re doing everything with only a fraction of your actual potential.
Oig advises a simple, albeit difficult, fix: Finish one task before moving to the next. Treat the transition like a meditative practice—one thing, fully realized, then complete.
Breathwork: The Body’s Off-Switch
While meditation addresses the mind, Oig views breathwork as the tool for the body. The most profound hack for stress is nasal breathing and the extended exhale.
Our bodies are designed to inhale and exhale through the nose. When we breathe through our mouths, we miss out on nitric oxide production—a vital compound that supports health—and we signal to our nervous system that we are in a state of fight-or-flight.
To physically force your body into a state of calm, Oig suggests the double-exhale technique:
- Inhale for 3 seconds.
- Exhale for 6 seconds.
By doubling the length of your exhale, you are literally sending a physiological command to your heart rate to slow down (36:06).
Healing the Collective
Finally, the conversation touches on a deeper layer: ancestral trauma. Oig notes that much of the anxiety we carry might not even be “ours” in the traditional sense; it exists in our DNA, passed down through generations. Healing isn’t just a personal luxury—it’s a responsibility. By dissolving our own trauma and regulating our nervous systems, we contribute to the healing of the collective consciousness.
